SYNC

2017-2022

Maria Dabrowski calls for reflection in times when technological progress is accelerating. Taking part in the “manufactured” world seems to matter more in the 21st century than coming to one’s senses. To circumvent a hyper-modern society that largely exists online, Dabrowski seeks a new balance. As people increasingly struggle with burnouts and mental issues continue to become more apparent in our fast-paced, demanding world, ‘Sync’ looks to shed new light on a more subjective and natural rhythm, with attention for everyday details. The series of analogue photographs enters a layered interaction with the graphic design developed in collaboration with Studio Another Day. The whole is supported by a critical and questioning text by Joris van Merwijk, which puts people's subjective experience of time above the hectic, objective time of the West.

Maria has developed a video installation for this exhibition. During an EEG experiment, a test subject viewed the images from the photo book, and the brain activity was measured with electrodes on the head. The raw data of this viewing process has been converted into image and sound, so that you as a visitor can be immersed in the process of image consumption. The results of this experiment have also been integrated into the design of the photo book: for each photo it is shown how long the subject has looked at it.

How fleeting is our attention to images these days? How can we learn to slow down? And what does it mean for us as humans that so much of our behavior is converted into data?
